The Portuguese Podengo (Medio) Community

The Portuguese Podengo Medio is the medium-sized variety of the Portuguese Podengo, an ancient family of primitive hunting dogs indigenous to Portugal that has been used for centuries primarily for rabbit hunting across the rocky and challenging terrain of the Iberian Peninsula. The Podengo family is divided into three distinct size categories - the Pequeno (small), the Medio (medium) and the Grande (large) - which differ not only in size but in their historical use and, to a degree, in their character and working style. The Podengo Medio was used for flushing and hunting rabbit in the scrub and woodland of Portugal, typically working in packs. The breed is ancient - primitive dogs of this general Mediterranean sighthound type have been present in the Iberian Peninsula for at least two thousand years, brought by Phoenician traders and subsequently developed in isolation. In the United Kingdom the Podengo is registered by the Kennel Club in the Hound Group. The Podengo Medio exists in two coat varieties: the smooth-coated (pelo liso) and the wire-coated (pelo cerdoso). Both varieties have the characteristically large, erect ears, lean and athletic build and wedge-shaped head of the primitive Mediterranean hound family. The coat in the smooth variety is short and close; in the wire variety it is rough and harsh. Colour is yellow or fawn, with or without white markings. Adults typically stand 40 to 54 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh 16 to 20 kilograms. The character is alert, active, energetic and independent - a working primitive hound rather than a people-pleasing companion. The Podengo Medio is devoted to familiar people and can be an affectionate household companion with the right owner, but it carries the natural reserve with strangers and the independence of decision-making that characterises all primitive hound breeds. It is not a breed that offers easy compliance to an inexperienced or passive owner. The prey drive is strong and the athletic capability considerable. Secure fencing of a sufficient height is essential. Off-lead exercise in unsecured areas should not be considered regardless of training level - the chase response in the presence of prey is simply too powerful to override reliably in the field. The breed is generally considered healthy. Hip Dysplasia testing of parents is recommended. No comprehensive breed health programme exists in the UK given the small population. Purchase prices from registered breeders range from £800 to £1,500. Monthly running costs average £70 to £120.
