Is the 7-year rule accurate?
No. The idea that one dog year equals seven human years is a rough average at best and misleading at worst. Dogs age much faster in their first two years and far more slowly after that. A one-year-old dog is more like a 15-year-old human, not a 7-year-old.
Why does size affect the result?
Larger dogs grow faster, which puts more demand on their bodies and is associated with faster cellular ageing. Giant breeds like Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds typically live 7-10 years, while small breeds like Chihuahuas and Bichon Frises often reach 12-16. The formula adjusts for this.
When is a dog considered senior?
It depends on size. Small breeds are generally considered senior at around 10-12 years. Medium breeds at 9-11 years. Large breeds from around 8-10 years, and giant breeds from as early as 7-9 years. Your vet can advise on when to switch to a senior health regime.
