Here is our honest view. If your dog is reactive, an escape artist, or simply happier with space, book a cottage. A genuinely enclosed private garden beats any on-site dog exercise area, and you will not spend the week apologising to the caravan next door. If your dog is sociable and you want a holiday that includes a hot tub, an on-site shop and other dogs to sniff, a lodge or holiday park wins, and the better parks now treat dogs as properly as any cottage owner does.

Check whether the garden is fully enclosed, how many dogs are allowed, and whether there are any breed or size restrictions. Ask about nearby walking routes, the nearest vet, and whether the property provides dog bowls, towels or a crate.

Do most dog-friendly cottages charge extra for dogs?

Many properties charge a small pet supplement, typically between £20 and £50 per stay. Some charge per dog, per night. Always check the total cost including any pet fees before booking. Look for properties that include dogs at no extra charge if budget is a concern.

How do I know if the garden is safely enclosed for my dog?

Look for listings that specifically mention a fully enclosed or secure garden. Check the fence height, especially if you have a breed that can jump or climb. If in doubt, contact the owner directly before booking. A garden described as "private" is not the same as "enclosed".

What if my dog damages something at the cottage?
