Question 1

What should I look for in a dog trainer?

Accepted Answer

Look for qualifications from a recognised body such as IMDT, APDT, or COAPE, and confirm they use force-free, reward-based methods only. Ask about their experience with your specific issue, whether that is reactivity, recall, or puppy basics, and check they can provide references.

Question 2

How do I find a dog trainer near me?

Accepted Answer

Use the postcode search above to find qualified trainers near you. You can also search the APDT directory at apdt.co.uk or the IMDT directory at imdt.uk.com, both of which list trainers who meet professional and ethical standards.

Question 3

What qualifications should a dog trainer have in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Look for membership of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), or the COAPE Association of Pet Behaviourists and Trainers. These bodies require demonstrated knowledge, ongoing CPD, and adherence to an ethical code of practice.

Question 4

How much does dog training cost in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Group puppy or obedience classes typically cost £8 to £15 per session. One-to-one training ranges from £40 to £100 or more per hour depending on the trainer's experience, specialism, and location. Behaviour consultations for complex issues may cost more.

Question 5

What is force-free dog training?

Accepted Answer

Force-free training uses positive reinforcement, such as treats, toys and praise, to teach and motivate dogs without the use of pain, fear, or intimidation. It is the approach recommended by modern canine science and the majority of professional training bodies in the UK.

Question 6

At what age should I start training my dog?

Accepted Answer

You can begin basic training and socialisation from 8 weeks old. The critical socialisation window closes around 12 to 16 weeks, so early exposure to people, sounds and environments is important. Formal training classes are usually suitable from 12 weeks, once your puppy has had their first vaccinations.

Question 7

How many sessions will my dog need?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the issue and your dog's progress. Puppy classes typically run for 6 to 8 weeks. One-to-one sessions for recall or basic manners might take 4 to 6 sessions. Complex issues such as reactivity or separation anxiety usually require longer, more structured programmes.
