The Sproodle Community

The Sproodle is a cross between an English Springer Spaniel and a Poodle, usually a Standard or Miniature Poodle depending on the size the breeder is aiming for. It is not a recognised breed and is not registered by the Kennel Club. As with any first-generation or later-generation cross, individual dogs vary considerably in size, coat type, temperament and health depending on the parents and the generation involved. The English Springer Spaniel is a working gundog bred to flush and retrieve game over long days in the field, and that heritage shows through clearly in the Sproodle. This is not a low-energy companion dog. Sproodles are active, driven, and happiest with a job to do, whether that is formal gundog work, agility, scent work, or simply a household that walks and plays with real commitment every day. Combined with the Poodle's intelligence and biddability, the result is a dog that is quick to learn but also quick to become bored, and boredom in a Sproodle tends to show up as digging, chewing, or an insistence on finding its own entertainment. It does not suit owners looking for a sedate, low-maintenance companion, or households that are out of the house for long stretches without a plan for exercise and mental stimulation either side of the working day. Coat type is one of the more variable aspects of the Sproodle. Springer Spaniels carry a flat or wavy, water-resistant double coat with feathering on the ears, legs and tail; Poodles carry a dense, curling single coat. Sproodle coats commonly land somewhere between the two: wavy rather than tightly curled, with moderate shedding that is usually lower than a purebred Springer but rarely as low as a purebred Poodle. Regular brushing two to three times a week, plus attention to feathering around the ears and legs, keeps the coat manageable. A professional groom every six to eight weeks is typical. Health testing of both parent dogs matters as much here as with any other poodle cross. The Springer Spaniel parent should be hip scored and tested for Fucosidosis, a serious inherited storage disease specific to the breed with a reliable DNA test, along with Progressive Retinal Atrophy. The Poodle parent should be hip scored and DNA tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy and hereditary cataracts. Both breeds are prone to ear infections due to their long, hair-covered ear canals, so routine ear cleaning is part of ongoing care regardless of health testing. A responsible breeder will provide documented results for both parents without being asked twice. Purchase prices for a Sproodle puppy in the UK typically range from £800 to £2,000, depending on the breeder, generation and coat type. Monthly running costs average £110 to £180, and comprehensive pet insurance is recommended from the outset given the working-breed inherited conditions on the Springer side. For active owners who can commit to well over an hour of exercise daily, consistent training, and health-tested parents, the Sproodle is a rewarding, biddable companion. For households that underestimate the working-gundog energy of the Springer Spaniel parent, it is a considerably bigger commitment than the appealing photos suggest.
