Aldeburgh plays it straight with dog owners: the town beach carries a seasonal restriction from May to September, so in summer the famous fish-and-chips-on-the-shingle experience is one for the humans. The good news sits just up the coast. Thorpeness, a two-mile walk north, is zoned so dogs keep access all year, and Sizewell and Dunwich beaches, both within a short drive, welcome dogs year round.

Out of season, Aldeburgh's own shingle opens back up and the town becomes a classic winter beach-walk destination, with the North Sea light that has drawn painters and composers here for a century.
