Balfour Winery sits within the 400-acre Hush Heath Estate near Staplehurst in the High Weald, producing English sparkling wine from a mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines. The estate is a serious wine operation with a cellar door, a restaurant and a guided tour programme that covers the vineyard, winery and tasting. The surrounding Wealden landscape -- hop gardens, ancient woodland and farmland -- gives the estate a setting that justifies the visit independently of the wine.
The estate is one of the better-organised winery day trips in Kent. Guided tours cover the production process from vine to bottle with a tasting at the end; the cellar door shop is accessible without a tour. The Winemaker's Kitchen restaurant is the on-site food offer, booking-required at weekends. A weekend shuttle bus from Marden station connects the estate to the London Bridge line on selected Saturdays and Sundays, making it accessible without a car.
Late spring through autumn is the primary visiting window. June to September shows the vines at full canopy; late September to October brings harvest activity when the winery is at its most operationally visible. Winter and early spring are off-season for the vines but the cellar door shop remains open on reduced hours for direct sales.
