Common questions
Can my dog go on the beach today?

It depends on the specific beach. Many UK beaches allow dogs year-round with no seasonal restrictions. Others enforce seasonal bans, typically from May to September, meaning dogs are excluded from those stretches during peak season. Filter by "Year-round only" above to find beaches near you that are open right now, or check the restriction detail on any seasonal listing for specific dates and hours.

How are beach restrictions verified?

Every restriction is sourced from the relevant local council's published Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) or equivalent beach management plan. Each listing links directly to the council source document. We re-check all restrictions annually before the May season opens and update when councils publish changes mid-season.

What does "zoned access" mean?

Zoned means dogs are permitted on a designated section of the beach only, not the full stretch. This can be year-round or seasonal. The restriction detail on each listing specifies exactly which part of the beach is open to dogs, so you know where to head before you arrive.

Are early morning beach walks exempt from seasonal bans?

Some councils allow dogs before 9am and after 6pm (or 7pm) during seasonal ban periods, but many do not. It varies entirely by council, and there is no blanket UK rule. Where timed exemptions are confirmed in the council PSPO, the listing notes the specific hours. Never assume an early-morning exemption exists without checking.

What is the difference between "seasonal ban" and "estimated"?

A "seasonal ban" status is confirmed directly from the council's published PSPO with a linked source document. "Estimated" means the restriction is based on local reporting, visitor accounts, or historical patterns but has not yet been verified against an official council document. We flag these transparently and are working to verify all estimated entries against council sources.

Do Scottish beaches have dog bans?

Scotland has far fewer formal dog beach bans than England or Wales. Scottish councils generally do not use PSPOs for beach dog exclusions, so most Scottish beaches allow dogs year-round. A small number of managed beaches in resort areas (such as parts of Ayr or Aberdeen) have seasonal restrictions, and these are noted in the listings.

About this data

This is the most complete council-sourced directory of dog beach access rules in the UK, covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Every beach has been checked against the relevant local authority's Public Spaces Protection Order or equivalent beach management policy, with each listing linking directly to the council source so you can verify before you travel.

Most UK beach dog restrictions are enforced through PSPOs under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. Councils are required to review PSPOs every three years, which means rules can and do change. We track these reviews and update listings when new orders are published.

In Scotland, the position is different. Local authorities can use byelaws or management rules but rarely impose formal beach dog bans outside resort areas. The majority of Scottish beaches welcome dogs year-round without restriction.

If a beach is missing or a restriction has changed, you can submit a correction using the form above. We verify every submission against the council source within 48 hours before updating the listing.
