Ightham

Ightham Mote is a 14th-century moated manor house in a narrow, wooded valley in the North Downs, one of the most complete examples of medieval domestic architecture in England. Unlike the great houses of later periods, Ightham was built small and practical: the great hall, chapel, crypt and courtyard are compressed into a structure that sits directly in its moat with no parkland buffer between building and water.

The completeness is the thing. The Tudor painted ceiling, the medieval crypt, and the Grade I listed dog kennel in the courtyard are all present and accessible within the standard admission. The estate surrounding the manor has over 500 acres of North Downs landscape with walking trails that function independently of the house -- it is possible to arrive, walk the estate and understand the setting without going inside. For those entering the house, the daily 15-minute introductory talks are the most effective way to navigate the floor plan without missing the less-obvious elements.

April to October is the main season for full access; the house closes from November to late March but estate walks remain open. May and June are the strongest months for the surrounding woodland and garden.
