The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, known in Hungary as the Drotozsoru Magyar Vizsla, is a versatile hunt, point and retrieve gundog developed in Hungary during the 1930s by crossing the established smooth-coated Hungarian Vizsla with German Wirehaired Pointers, with the specific aim of creating a more weather-resistant and harder-working version of the Vizsla capable of working in harsher terrain and colder conditions than the smooth-coated original. The result is a breed that combines the exceptional nose, gentle mouth and loyal family character of the Vizsla with the wiry, weatherproof coat and slightly more robust working character of the Wirehaired Pointer influence. Registered by the Kennel Club in the Gundog Group, it has developed a dedicated following in the United Kingdom among working gundog owners and active families.
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is a medium to large gundog with a dense, wiry outer coat and a thick insulating undercoat in the characteristic golden rust colouring that defines both Vizsla varieties. The coat provides protection against cold, wet and thorny cover. Adults typically stand 54 to 64 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh 20 to 30 kilograms. The characteristic beard and eyebrows give the breed a distinguished expression. The overall build is athletic and well-muscled.
The character closely resembles the smooth Vizsla: loyal, affectionate, energetic and deeply devoted to its people, with the same velcro-like tendency to remain close to its owner that has made both Vizsla varieties so popular as family dogs among active households. The Wirehaired is generally considered slightly more assertive than the smooth variety - a reflection of its Wirehaired Pointer influence - but remains fundamentally a gentle, family-oriented breed rather than a guarding type.
The exercise requirement is substantial and must be taken seriously. Two or more hours of vigorous daily exercise is the minimum this breed needs to remain physically and mentally settled. A Wirehaired Vizsla that receives adequate exercise is among the most rewarding of all companion breeds. One that does not is genuinely difficult to live with.
Training capability is high. The breed responds excellently to positive methods and excels in field trials, working tests, agility and obedience.
Hip and elbow dysplasia are the primary health concerns and both parents should be tested. Eye conditions have been documented.
Purchase prices from KC-registered, health-tested breeders range from £1,000 to £2,000. Monthly running costs average £120 to £190. The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Club is the primary resource for breed information, health testing, responsible breeders and rescue contact.
Temperament & Personality
Loyal, energetic, affectionate and hunting-driven - the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla shares the smooth Vizsla's deep devotion to its family with a slightly more assertive character. Excellent with children. Good with other dogs. Can be velcro-like in its attachment to its owner. Not a guard dog. Needs significant companionship and exercise.
Training
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are highly intelligent and very trainable - they excel at gundog work, field trials and dog sports. Positive reinforcement works extremely well. They are loyal and keen to please but need consistent, experienced handling. Training should begin from puppyhood. Professional gundog guidance is recommended.
Exercise Needs
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas need 2 or more hours of vigorous daily exercise. This is a minimum requirement. They need sustained running, swimming and purposeful activity. Dog sports including field trials, agility and canicross are ideal outlets. An under-exercised Wirehaired Vizsla is genuinely difficult to manage.
Health & Vet Costs
Hip and elbow dysplasia are the primary health concerns - both parents must be scored. Eye conditions including Progressive Retinal Atrophy have been documented. The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Club maintains health testing recommendations. Lifespan 12-14 years.
Feeding & Nutrition
High-quality medium to large breed complete food. Adults typically need 350-500g dry food daily across two meals. Working dogs need more. Monitor body condition - maintain lean athletic build. Fresh water always available.

Grooming & Care
The dense, wiry outer coat needs hand-stripping twice yearly to maintain correct texture. Clipping is an easier option for pet owners but softens the coat. Between strips, brush twice weekly. Beard and eyebrows need occasional trimming. Ears need regular checking.
Costs of Ownership
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla puppies from health-tested KC-registered breeders typically cost £1,000-£2,000. Annual ongoing costs including food, insurance and grooming average £1,400-£2,200.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas make excellent family dogs and are particularly good with children due to their affectionate and loyal nature. They thrive in active households where they receive plenty of attention and exercise, and their gentle temperament makes them reliable companions for families with older children.
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas require 90-120 minutes of exercise daily to stay healthy and content. These energetic gundogs were bred for hunting and need a combination of physical activity and mental stimulation, such as retrieving games, running, and training sessions.
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are low shedders, which is one of the advantages of their wiry coat. Regular brushing a few times per week will help maintain their coat condition and minimise any loose hair around the home.
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively responsive to training. However, they require experienced handlers who can provide consistent, positive reinforcement and are not recommended for first-time dog owners due to their high energy levels and need for firm, knowledgeable guidance.
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas typically live for 12-14 years, which is a good lifespan for a large breed. Providing proper nutrition, regular exercise, and routine veterinary care will help ensure they enjoy a long and healthy life.
The estimated monthly cost of owning a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is between £120 and £190, which covers food, routine veterinary care, and general maintenance. This can vary depending on the individual dog's health, quality of food chosen, and any additional activities or training.
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas are not recommended for first-time owners due to their very high exercise requirements and need for experienced, consistent training. They require an owner who understands gundog breeds and can provide the substantial physical and mental stimulation these dogs demand.
