Breed Overview

The Old English Sheepdog, affectionately known as the Bobtail for its traditionally docked tail, is one of Britain's most recognisable and beloved dog breeds, a large, shaggy and exuberant herding dog developed in England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as a drover's dog, used to move sheep and cattle to market on the drove roads of southern England. The breed's exact origins are uncertain but likely include the Bearded Collie and possibly continental herding breeds brought to Britain by European drovers. It was first shown at a Birmingham dog show in 1873 and was one of the earliest breeds to be registered by the Kennel Club, where it is placed in the Pastoral Group. The breed became an iconic emblem of British popular culture through its use in advertising and film from the 1960s onwards.

The Old English Sheepdog is a large, strongly built and square-proportioned dog entirely covered in a profuse, hard, shaggy double coat of grey or grizzle and white. The coat falls over the eyes, giving the breed its characteristic peering expression. The rolling, bear-like ambling gait is unique and immediately recognisable. The tail is traditionally docked to a stub - the Bobtail - though tail docking is now restricted in the UK and naturally bobtailed individuals do occur. Adults typically stand 56 centimetres and above at the shoulder and weigh 27 to 45 kilograms.

The character is gentle, playful, exuberant and deeply devoted to its family. The Old English Sheepdog is excellent with children - patient, affectionate and genuinely fond of family activity - and generally sociable and tolerant with other dogs. It retains the herding intelligence of its working heritage and benefits from mental engagement alongside physical exercise. As a puppy it is boisterous and sometimes overwhelming in its enthusiasm; it matures into a steady, calm and deeply loyal adult.

The grooming requirement is the defining practical challenge of Old English Sheepdog ownership. The profuse double coat mats with extraordinary speed if not maintained - neglected coats can become solid and uncomfortable within days of inadequate brushing. Thorough grooming three times weekly as a minimum, progressing to daily during shedding seasons and as the adult coat develops, is the non-negotiable reality of owning the breed. Many pet owners opt to maintain the coat at a shorter, more manageable length through regular professional clipping.

Health considerations include Hip Dysplasia, for which scoring is strongly recommended. Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Hereditary Cataract are documented. Bloat is a risk in large, deep-chested breeds.

Purchase prices from KC-registered, health-tested breeders range from £1,200 to £2,500. Monthly running costs, particularly including grooming, average £120 to £200. The Old English Sheepdog Club and regional breed clubs are the primary resources for breed information, health testing, responsible breeders and rescue contact.

Temperament & Personality

Gentle, playful and deeply affectionate. Devoted to its family and excellent with children. Generally sociable and tolerant with other dogs. Boisterous and exuberant as a puppy. Calms considerably as it matures into a steady adult. The characteristic rolling, bear-like gait and exuberant personality make it one of the most memorable of all breeds.

Training

Intelligent and capable but the herding background produces a dog that thinks for itself. Responds well to positive, engaging training methods. The breed can be used successfully in obedience and agility. Early socialisation and consistent training from puppyhood are important. Patience and consistency produce reliable results.

Exercise Needs

Needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of daily vigorous exercise. The herding background means the breed benefits from activities beyond routine walking - agility, herding sports, retrieving and nose work all engage the working intelligence. An under-exercised Old English Sheepdog becomes restless and may develop nuisance behaviours.

Health & Vet Costs

Hip Dysplasia is a primary concern and hip scoring of both parents is strongly recommended. Progressive Retinal Atrophy is documented in the breed and DNA testing of parents is recommended. Hereditary Cataract has also been documented. Deafness testing (BAER testing) is recommended for merle-pattern individuals. Bloat is a risk in large, deep-chested breeds. The Old English Sheepdog Club maintains comprehensive health testing guidance.

Feeding & Nutrition

Feed a high-quality complete food for a large active breed. Two meals daily to reduce bloat risk. Monitor weight - the dense coat can conceal condition changes. Avoid feeding before or after vigorous exercise to reduce bloat risk.

Grooming & Care

The profuse, hard double coat is one of the most demanding of all dog breeds to maintain. Thorough brushing at minimum three times weekly, progressing to daily as the adult coat develops, is required to prevent the catastrophic matting that occurs within days if grooming is neglected. Many pet owners opt for a regular clip to a manageable length. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks is standard for pet owners.

Costs of Ownership

Purchase price from a KC-registered, health-tested breeder: £1,200 to £2,500. Monthly running costs: £120 to £200, with professional grooming representing a significant proportion of ongoing costs.

This is one of the more expensive breeds to insure. Lifetime cover is the only policy type that covers ongoing conditions year after year. Compare quotes before your first vet visit.
