Chilham is a Tudor village built around a cobbled square so intact it has served repeatedly as a film and television set without needing alteration. The square is flanked on all sides by timber-framed buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries, with St Mary's Church at one end and the private castle gatehouse at the other. The effect is less a visitor attraction than a place that genuinely has not changed.
Most visitors photograph the square and leave within an hour. What they miss is the castle gardens -- 330 acres of sculpted grounds and woodland with long views across the Stour Valley toward the North Downs. The gardens open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays between May and September, which keeps numbers low and preserves the sense of finding something private. The North Downs Way footpath passes through the village and gives access to orchard and wildflower meadow country in all directions.
Late April is the strongest month: orchard blossom is at full height, the gardens open for the season and the village is not yet carrying summer visitor numbers. October brings Stour Valley colour and significantly lower crowds. The gardens close from October to late April, so a Tuesday or Thursday visit in the shoulder season is the best available window.
