The Grain Peninsula is the remote north-eastern tip of the Hoo Peninsula in north Kent, where the Thames and Medway estuaries meet. The area has a distinctive end-of-land quality -- flat, exposed, and largely industrial in the middle with a refinery and power station, but with genuinely remote coastal margins at its edges. Grain Beach is a long stretch of sand and shingle at the very tip of the peninsula, with wide estuary views across to the Essex coast and back towards the Medway towns. The atmosphere is one of the most singular on the entire Kent coast.
The Grain Marshes SSSI behind the beach is a Special Protection Area for coastal and estuary birds, and the sea wall path east from the beach car park gives access to the mudflats where wading birds feed at low tide. At spring tides the foreshore exposes the concrete remains of wartime sea forts and structures that are otherwise submerged -- timing a visit to arrive two hours before low tide gives the best access to these. The flat shoreline and open estuary make photography here unusually uncluttered.
There is no practical public transport to the Grain Peninsula and a car is essential; the journey takes around 90 minutes from London via the A2 and A289 through the Hoo Peninsula. The beach car park at the end of the High Street has a 1.9-metre height restriction and limited spaces. The only food in the area is the pub in Grain village, a short drive from the beach.
