Kingsdown

Kingsdown is a small clifftop village on the Kent coast between Deal and St Margaret's Bay, reached by a single lane from Walmer. The village sits above a shingle beach at the base of white chalk cliffs and is connected north to south by the Saxon Shore Way, which runs through the chalk grassland on the cliff top managed by the National Trust. It is one of the quietest coastal settlements on the entire Kent shoreline and attracts largely walkers and swimmers rather than day-trippers.

The Saxon Shore Way section south from Kingsdown towards St Margaret's Bay gives the most direct views across the Dover Strait of any accessible footpath on the Kent coast. France is visible from the cliff top on clear mornings at a distance of around 34 miles. The chalk grassland along the path is managed for rare downland plants and wild orchids, with several species flowering between May and July. The path is narrow in places and the surface is uneven over chalk, but the full section to St Margaret's Bay is walkable in under two hours each way.

Parking in Kingsdown is almost entirely on-street on Undercliffe Road near the beach and fills early on summer weekends. Arriving before 9am or parking in Walmer -- 2 miles north -- and walking the coastal path south are both more reliable options. Walmer station is on the Deal line from London Victoria.
