Sandwich

Sandwich is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England by a measurable margin: more than 400 listed buildings in a town of under 5,000 people, a largely intact circuit of earthwork defences, and streets of timber-framed buildings that have not materially changed since the 15th century. The town was once one of the most important ports in England, its decline so complete that it is now 2 miles from the sea.

The Barbican gate and the Fisher Gate are two of the five original town gates that survive; the rest were demolished. Walking through the Barbican from the bridge and continuing along the Quay to the river walk gives the clearest sense of the town's medieval scale. South from the Fisher Gate, the Saxon Shore Way follows the riverbank through open marshland toward the estuary, where seals are regularly visible on the mudbanks. Richborough Roman Fort -- the landing point of the Roman invasion in AD 43 -- is 2.5 miles along this path.

Spring and autumn are the strongest seasons: the medieval streets are at their quietest and the river walk at its most atmospheric without summer boat traffic. The town functions as a working market town throughout the year, which distinguishes it from preserved heritage sites where the surroundings feel staged.
