The UK has more than 140,000 miles of public rights of way, and the vast majority are open to dogs. The problem is knowing which ones are worth the trip: too many online walk guides are written for hikers, not dog owners, and the ones that mention dogs rarely tell you about stiles, livestock fields or on-lead requirements until you get there.

Every walk on this page has been checked for dog access. We note difficulty, terrain type, off-lead sections, stile counts and any restrictions. If a walk crosses livestock fields or requires your dog on lead for extended sections, that is flagged upfront.

Dog walks: common questions

Where can I find dog walks near me in the UK?
Search by town or browse by region to find dog walks near you. Each walk includes distance, difficulty and terrain details. The Ordnance Survey OS Maps app and the Woodland Trust also maintain searchable walk databases.
Can I let my dog off the lead on public footpaths?
Not automatically. Dogs must be kept on a lead near livestock and in many nature reserves, national parks and designated wildlife areas. Always check signage at the start of a walk and keep your dog on a lead where instructed.
What makes a dog walk suitable for puppies?
Shorter distances, flatter terrain, and soft surfaces such as grass or woodland floor are easier on developing puppy joints. Avoid long or steep walks until your dog is fully grown, typically 12 to 18 months depending on breed size.
Are there dog walks suitable for elderly or arthritic dogs?
Yes. Filter by easy difficulty and look for walks under 3 miles on flat terrain. Riverside and park walks tend to have the gentlest surfaces. Avoid walks with stiles or steep gradients.
How are the walks on this site selected?
Walks are sourced from local knowledge, submitted by dog owners and verified by the editorial team. Every walk has a route description, distance, difficulty rating and terrain type.
