Breed Overview

The Springerdoodle is a hybrid dog produced by crossing an English Springer Spaniel with a Standard or Miniature Poodle, combining the Springer's extraordinary drive, nose and retrieving instinct with the Poodle's trainability, sociability and lower-shedding coat qualities to produce a highly active, intelligent and typically enthusiastic companion that has attracted significant interest from families seeking a high-energy dog with reduced shedding and natural working capability. The Springerdoodle is not a registered breed with the Kennel Club and does not have a formal breed standard, meaning appearance, character and coat type vary between individuals.

The typical Springerdoodle is a medium to large, well-built and athletic dog with a wavy to curly coat that is usually lower-shedding than the Springer Spaniel parent alone, though the degree of reduction in shedding depends on which parent's coat genes dominate and cannot be guaranteed in first-generation crosses. Coat colour varies widely, reflecting the wide colour range of both parent breeds - liver and white, black and white, roan, brown, black and various combinations all occur. Adults typically stand 43 to 58 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh 16 to 30 kilograms depending on the Poodle parent size used.

The character is friendly, enthusiastic and high-energy - the Springer heritage brings a working drive that is among the most intense of all spaniels, and this is not a cross suited to moderate-activity households. The Springerdoodle needs sustained daily exercise, mental stimulation through training and nose work, and a household that genuinely enjoys and participates in active dog ownership. The combination of Springer exuberance and Poodle intelligence can produce an extremely capable and rewarding companion for active owners, but the same energy without adequate outlet produces a dog that is difficult to live with.

Training is a genuine strength. The cross is highly intelligent and responds brilliantly to positive reinforcement, with particular natural aptitude for scent work, retrieving and agility.

Health testing of both parents is essential. Hip Dysplasia, PRA DNA testing and PKD testing are the primary considerations.

Purchase prices from health-tested breeders range from £800 to £2,000. Monthly running costs average £90 to £160. No breed-specific club exists - Springer Spaniel and Poodle rescue organisations are the primary contacts for rescue animals. The Springerdoodle is not a cross suited to first-time owners given the energy level and stimulation demands - it is best matched to owners with previous experience of high-drive spaniels or working dogs who understand how to channel that drive productively.

Temperament & Personality

Friendly, energetic, affectionate and enthusiastic. Good with children and sociable with other dogs. The combination of Springer exuberance and Poodle intelligence produces a lively, engaged and warm companion. Strong working drive. Devoted to its family. Playful and active. Not suited to a quiet household.

Training

Highly intelligent and very trainable. The Springer heritage brings real nose and retrieval drive; the Poodle heritage brings fast learning and responsiveness. Responds brilliantly to positive reinforcement. Excels in nose work, agility, obedience and gundog work. Early socialisation is important. One of the more capable and rewarding hybrid breeds to train.

Good to know

This breed is well-suited to first-time owners. An APDT puppy class in the first 12 weeks is still strongly recommended — early socialisation shapes temperament for life.

Exercise Needs

Needs a minimum of 90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. The Springer heritage produces a dog with extraordinary stamina and drive. This is a high-energy cross that will not be satisfied with short walks. Mental stimulation through nose work, training and retrieval is equally important.

Health & Vet Costs

Health testing of both parents is essential. For the English Springer Spaniel parent: Hip Dysplasia, Phosphofructokinase Deficiency DNA testing and eye testing. For the Poodle parent: Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy DNA testing and Von Willebrand's Disease. Exercise-Induced Collapse has been documented in Springer lines and may appear in the cross. Always request evidence of health testing before purchasing.

Feeding & Nutrition

Feed a high-quality complete food for a medium to large active breed. Two meals daily. Monitor weight. The Springer heritage produces a dog with a strong food drive - do not leave food accessible.

Grooming & Care

The coat varies from wavy to curly and is typically lower-shedding than the Springer Spaniel parent alone. Brushing three to four times weekly prevents matting. Professional grooming every 8 to 10 weeks is standard. The ears require regular checking and cleaning given the floppy ear canals.

Costs of Ownership

Purchase price from a health-tested breeder: £800 to £2,000. Monthly running costs: £90 to £160 given the size and activity requirements.

Owner note

This is one of the more expensive breeds to insure. Lifetime cover is the only policy type that covers ongoing conditions year after year. Compare quotes before your first vet visit.

Is your Springerdoodle insured?

Springerdoodle insurance typically costs £20–£55 per month depending on age, cover level and where you live. Getting the right policy before your first vet visit is one of the most important decisions you will make as a new owner.

Rescuing a Springerdoodle

Springerdoodle-specific rescue organisations are run by people who know the breed inside out. They assess every dog carefully and match them to homes that genuinely suit their needs. Waiting lists exist but are worth it.

General rescues including Dogs Trust, RSPCA and Battersea also occasionally have Springerdoodles available. Contact them directly to register your interest.
