Breed Overview

The Poochon, also known as the Bichpoo or Bichon Poodle, is a crossbreed produced from a Bichon Frise and a Miniature or Toy Poodle, combining two breeds highly regarded as companions to produce a small, low-shedding, affectionate and intelligent dog well suited to a wide range of households. The cross is popular among those seeking a companion with reduced shedding and the Poodle's trainability combined with the Bichon Frise's warmth, sociability and manageable size. It is not recognised by the Kennel Club and has no formal breed standard, breed club or mandatory health testing programme.

The Bichon Frise is a French and Belgian breed with Tenerife and Mediterranean origins, known for its white, soft and curly low-shedding coat, its cheerful and sociable character and its adaptability to a wide range of living situations. The Poodle - whether in the Miniature or Toy variety - is one of the world's most intelligent and trainable breeds, also low-shedding, and brings additional energy, trainability and problem-solving ability to the cross. The combination typically produces a small, curly or wavy-coated dog that is both affectionate and capable.

Appearance is relatively consistent between individuals compared to some crossbreeds - most Poochons have a soft, curly or wavy coat in white or cream, sometimes with apricot or buff tones. The size varies depending on whether a Miniature or Toy Poodle was used, with adults typically weighing 4 to 9 kilograms.

The character is affectionate, sociable and playful - the Bichon Frise's warmth and people-pleasing quality combined with the Poodle's alertness and trainability. The Poochon is good with children, sociable with other dogs and adaptable to a wide range of living situations including smaller homes. It is notably more trainable and mentally active than the Bichon Frise alone. The Poochon is well suited to first-time dog owners given the manageable size, sociable character and responsive trainability, and is one of the more appealing small crossbreeds for family life.

The coat, while low-shedding, requires regular professional grooming. It grows continuously and will mat if not maintained - the brushing and grooming commitment is real and ongoing.

Health considerations include DNA testing for Progressive Retinal Atrophy in the Poodle parent and Hip Dysplasia assessment. Von Willebrand Disease is documented in both parent breeds. Patellar Luxation and dental health are management concerns in small breeds.

Purchase prices range from £800 to £1,500. Monthly running costs, including regular professional grooming, average £65 to £110. Doodle Trust and general small breed rescue organisations are the most useful contacts for those considering rehoming.

Temperament & Personality

Affectionate, sociable, playful and good-natured. Good with children and other dogs. The combination of Bichon Frise warmth and Poodle intelligence produces an engaging and pleasant companion. Not typically demanding or anxious if well socialised from puppyhood. One of the more appealing small doodle crosses for family life.

Training

Intelligent and trainable - the Poodle influence makes this cross notably responsive and capable. Responds enthusiastically to positive reinforcement. Good for first-time owners willing to put the training time in. The Bichon Frise adds a happy, people-pleasing quality that makes sessions enjoyable. Early socialisation is important and generally straightforward.

Good to know

This breed is well-suited to first-time owners. An APDT puppy class in the first 12 weeks is still strongly recommended — early socialisation shapes temperament for life.

Exercise Needs

Moderate exercise needs - 30 to 45 minutes daily is typically adequate. The Poodle influence brings more energy and trainability than the Bichon Frise alone. Benefits from mental stimulation through training and interactive play alongside physical exercise.

Health & Vet Costs

Hip Dysplasia testing of both parents is recommended. Progressive Retinal Atrophy is documented in Poodles and DNA testing of the Poodle parent is strongly recommended. Von Willebrand Disease has been documented in both breeds. Patellar Luxation is a concern in small breeds. Dental health requires ongoing management. No formal crossbreed testing scheme exists.

Feeding & Nutrition

Feed a high-quality complete food for a small breed. Dental health is a consideration in small breeds. Two meals daily. Monitor weight.

Grooming & Care

The soft, curly or wavy coat is low-shedding but requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Brushing three to four times weekly and professional clipping every 6 to 8 weeks is the typical maintenance requirement. The coat does not shed significantly but grows continuously and requires regular professional attention.

Costs of Ownership

Purchase price: £800 to £1,500. No formal health testing scheme exists. Monthly running costs: £65 to £110, including regular professional grooming.

Owner note

This is one of the more expensive breeds to insure. Lifetime cover is the only policy type that covers ongoing conditions year after year. Compare quotes before your first vet visit.

Is your Poochon insured?

Poochon insurance typically costs £15–£40 per month depending on age, cover level and where you live. Getting the right policy before your first vet visit is one of the most important decisions you will make as a new owner.
