Closest: Margate, 3.6 miles
Birchington-on-Sea sits at the western edge of Thanet, where the coastline curves into the broad arc of Minnis Bay before the cliffs begin. The village has a direct rail connection from London Victoria with its own station, and the beach is an unusually short walk from the platform -- a detail that makes it one of the most accessible sandy beaches on the entire north Kent coast for those travelling without a car. Minnis Bay itself is sheltered and shallow, with calm water at low tide that makes it popular with families and paddlers.
The clifftop path west from the bay leads to Westgate-on-Sea, where chalk stacks break from the shoreline below the cliff edge, offering coastal views that are quieter and less visited than comparable spots closer to Margate. In the opposite direction, the path east from the station runs along the cliff top above a quieter section of coast before the Thanet resorts begin in earnest. Both walks are accessible and largely flat.
Margate's Shell Grotto -- a subterranean passage lined with 4.6 million shells of entirely unknown origin, first opened to the public in 1838 -- is around 4 miles east and makes a practical half-day add-on; check shellgrotto.co.uk before combining visits as seasonal hours apply. Minnis Bay car park charges apply in season and spaces fill quickly on summer weekends, so arrival before 10am is recommended.
