St Ives

St Ives developed as a fishing port, and the bones of that original town, the narrow alleys of the Downalong district, the harbour, the small fishermen's cottages, remain visible beneath the galleries and restaurants. The harbour still operates, though the fishing industry is much reduced from its peak.

Artists began arriving in significant numbers from the 1880s, drawn by what became known as the quality of light in West Cornwall. Because St Ives is almost entirely surrounded by sea, light reflects off the water and the white sand from multiple directions simultaneously, creating unusually bright and diffuse conditions that suited the plein-air painting fashionable at the time. The St Ives School, which developed through the mid-20th century, included sculptors and painters working in abstraction: Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Ben Nicholson, and later Patrick Heron.

Tate St Ives opened in 1993 and was expanded in 2017 by Jamie Fobert Architects, roughly doubling the exhibition space. It was named Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2018. The collection draws primarily on artists connected to Cornwall and the St Ives School, and the building itself, positioned above Porthmeor Beach with an ocean-facing terrace, is part of the experience.

The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden occupies Trewyn Studio, where Hepworth lived and worked from 1949 until her death in a studio fire in 1975. The museum opened in 1976 and has been run by Tate since 1980. More than thirty sculptures are placed across the property, including the studio interior where tools and works in progress were left largely as they were at the time of her death. It is one of the more affecting artist studios open to the public in Britain.

Which beaches are there in St Ives and how do you get there?

The six beaches each have a different character. Porthminster, a ten-minute walk south of the town centre, has calm, sheltered water and is consistently the most family-friendly. Porthmeor faces the Atlantic to the north and has surf. The harbour beach and Porthgwidden are smaller and central.

The St Ives Bay Line, a branch from St Erth on the main London Paddington to Penzance route, takes thirteen minutes and follows the estuary and coastline, carrying over 750,000 passengers a year. Driving and parking in St Ives is difficult and expensive in summer; the train or the park-and-ride at St Erth are the practical alternatives.

St Ives works for art-focused visitors, beach-oriented breaks, and anyone who wants a Cornish coastal town with more substance than the average resort. It is busy from June through August, and accommodation is limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended for any summer weekend.
